On every comedic sitcom, at one point or another an old person pulls out a donut ring to sit on. Most people laugh, and those of us who have experienced hemorrhoids wince a little just at the thought. While it may be humorous to people who have never had a hemorrhoid, they are anything butt when you have one yourself.
Hemorrhoids are a nasty business, the worst part of it is the lack of common knowledge about what they are, how to prevent them, and how to take care of them when you got em. It’s true that they more commonly present themselves amongst the elderly, but that is more a lifestyle issue, than it is an aging issue.
“One person had hemorrhoids and was scheduled for surgery, but after two weeks of using Numbify, his doctor canceled the surgery because he was healing so well.”Let’s start with what hemorrhoids are. Hemorrhoids are a swelling of the veins in your lower veins and rectum. The veins can sometimes become so swollen that they begin to bulge out of the skin. This can get particularly bad when you poop. One of the most common reasons for the development of hemorrhoids is excessive straining while using the toilet. Excessive straining can be symptomatic of a wide variety of reasons, constipation being the most common. Another cause for excessive straining can be from kinks in the bowel from excessive amounts of sitting during the day. Even if you have a largely sedentary job getting up and stretching and walking around for 5 minutes an hour is good for more than just your back, it’s good for your bowels too. Poor bathroom habits, dehydration (or lack of sufficient water in your diet, sodas and sodium heavy drinks can make this worse even if you are getting enough fluids), lack of sufficient fiber in your diet, (or trying to add fiber back into your diet too fast) are all problematic, and cause cause excessive straining in the bathroom.
As you can see, these are problems that can cause issues at any stage of life, although the elderly are in general are more sedentary, and more likely to eat heavily processed foods that are fiber deficient, simply because they are easier to prepare.
So what are some ways to prevent hemorrhoids from becoming an issue. The best advice is to eat a well balanced diet low in meat, and heavy in fiber rich vegetables and beans. Red meat in particular while delicious for an occasional treat, really has no business in our daily diet. It is extremely slow to digest, often clogs the colon, and has been shown to lead to colon cancer. So save the steak for your anniversary or birthday, and switch to smaller portions of fish chicken and other poultry for your daily protein. Split pea soup, lentils, black beans, and many dark green vegetables are all good choices for fiber. Making a menu and basing your meals around getting proper fiber content and nutrition are all good choices. Be careful not to increase fiber too fast, as it can cause very uncomfortable bloating and constipation. Increase your daily dose by 3-5 grams a day each week to slowly work up to it.
Getting your daily hour of exercise, and your 5 minutes per hour stretch break is extremely important, especially for those of us who have sedentary jobs. A kinked bowel is not a pleasant thing for anyone.
Now all of this is great advice on how to prevent hemorrhoids, but you might be saying to yourself – Hey, I already have hemorrhoids, fat lot of good all that advice is going to do me now! Well don’t worry,we are going to hook you up with the best hemorrhoid pain and itch relief product, and some great tips on how to handle it.
First of all, we should say that when it comes to hemorrhoids, your doctor is your best friend. Hemorrhoids should always be treated under the supervision of a doctor, who will give you the best advice, and most importantly, will be able to guide you as to when they have become too serious for medication, and an operation may be needed. That’s right, sometimes hemorrhoids need to be operated on. Those 99 cent cheeseburgers you had for lunch every day last week aren’t seeming so cheap and delicious now are they?
If over the counter medications just aren’t helping you enough, it may be time to discuss surgical options with your doctor. I know, I know, this isn’t a pretty subject to discuss, even with a medical professional, but it’s important. An infected hemorrhoids can cause you to go septic, and lead to death, so it is extremely important that you be open and honest with your doctor regarding this issue.
